Foothill Comes Up Short Despite Thrilling Overtime, 40-37

The Foothill Falcons JV girls basketball team met a strong Monte Vista Lady Mustangs team Friday night on their turf. With a much faster pace, push in transition, and an aggressive defense, Monte Vista made it difficult for the Falcons to find any rhythm offensively in the first half connecting on only 5 of 15 attempts. The second half witnessed a more determined Falcon offense but struggled in holding Monte Vista’s 3 point shooters allowing them to connect on two critical 3 point shots in the 4th quarter. Despite a late, thrilling basket by Lindsey Allen via a long pass from Ashley Gustafson with 4.3 seconds to play to tie the game and send it into overtime, Foothill could not pull this one out. While the team persevered and tried, they could not connect on good looks and free throws both in regulation and the overtime period to take a lead. A 3 point shot with less than 30 seconds to play put Monte Vista ahead 39-36 but Foothill kept hope alive with a strong penetration and foul to put Lindsey Allen at the free throw line. Lindsey connected on 1 of 2 from the free throw line but the Falcons could not catch the Mustangs to put them back on the line in time for a chance to recover the possession. Watching the time tick away, the team finally put Monte Vista on the line with less than 2 seconds and this time the win was out of reach. Coach Terri McMorrow said, “Sometimes things don’t always go your way. Despite a tough struggle offensively in the first half and making some mistakes defensively by giving up critical three point shots, this team never gave up. They could have given in to defeat and said there is no way we can inbound the ball in their court and have a chance with 4.3 seconds left in regulation to tie. They believed the could do it and so they did executing a long ball play with Lindsey Allen making a very athletic and gutsy play to grab the ball and take it to the hole for the bucket with no time left to tie the game. Although we could not get much to fall in the OT, Monte Vista made the big plays when they needed to yet I am very proud of the determined nature of the team not to give up. They gave it everything they had and it is that experience that will carry them through the next competition even when things are not going your way.” (14-9, 7-3)
